transforming steel supply into steel service
Winter 2007
Suburban Erectors takes service to new heights.
Suburban Steel Supply strives to remove any obstacles builders and general contractors face when ordering and handling structural steel. A prime example of this approach is the company’s field division, Suburban Erectors, which provides on-site erecting and crane services for structural and ornamental/miscellaneous steel projects.
Suburban Erectors handles a range of work, varying in scale from small ornamental installations to the complete erection of structural steel for large-scale commercial projects. The professional team consists of five erectors and one crane operator—all of whom have numerous years of professional experience. An additional “team member” is Suburban Erectors’ 23-ton boom crane, which operates with nearly 100 feet of main boom. When not being used by the erectors, the crane is available for rent to set trusses, lift equipment and other uses.
Mike Wood, lead erector, has spent the past two decades of his professional career working for Suburban Steel—the past 15 of which have been exclusively with Suburban Erectors.
Before the steel arrives at the site, Wood and his team are on-site verifying actual site dimensions to match those of the construction drawings, including the dimensions and elevation levels. Any variations from the original plans of the project are noted and addressed by the detailing department to prevent any delays or changes after installation begins.
When the steel is delivered, the team is on a tight schedule to perform the work with complete control and accuracy. Most jobs are completed within one week. For jobs of a significantly larger scale, Suburban Erectors subcontracts with larger, highly reputable erecting companies.
Safety is always an important issue. For each job, the lead erector performs daily site inspections to ensure that the operation remains in compliance with safety regulations, and that the site meets Suburban Steel’s standards for a safe working environment.
This commitment to safety is shared by everyone throughout Suburban Steel. In 2005, the company earned the Safety Award of Honor from the American Institute of Steel Construction Inc., which recognizes a perfect safety record of no disabling injuries.
“We pride ourselves in doing the job the right way the first time,” said Wood. “Our goal is to complete the job and leave the job without anyone knowing we have been there, except for the work we have completed.”
Wood said he is particularly pleased with several projects his team has accomplished throughout central Ohio, including Hoover Grille, a Heartland Bank branch and an expansive residential garage in New Albany.
